Awards: In 1976, Mel Tillis was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters International Hall of Fame, and that same year, he was named Country Music Association's (CMA) Entertainer of the Year. Also, for six years in the 70's, Mel Tillis won Comedian of the Year.
Biography Early life. Mel Tillis was born on August 8, 1932, in Tampa, Florida to Burma (née Rogers; 1907 – 1990) and Lonnie Lee Tillis (1907 – 1981). While he was still young, the family moved to Pahokee, Florida (near West Palm Beach). His stutter developed during his childhood, a result of a bout with malaria.
Tillis, aside from his obvious talents as a singer and actor, was also a natural comedian-- his first comedy album, You Ain't Gonna Believe This, was released in 2010 on Show Dog Records. Mel Tillis died in November 2017 at the age of 85.
